    Åke Senning var son till distriktsveterinären David Senning och Elly Säfström. denne studerade inom Stockholm samt Karolinska institutet, där han blev tillsammans. lic. samt disputerade tillsammans Ventricular fibrillation during extracorporeal circulation used as a method to prevent air-embolisms and to facilitate intracardiac operations.     Åke Senning var den första hjärtkirurg som framgångsrikt lyckades operera transposition från de stora kärlen via en ytterst sinnrik teknik där blodet leddes riktig redan vid förmaksnivå. Transposition av dem stora kärlen betyder för att kropps- samt lungpulsådern äger bytt lokal och avgår från fel kamrar.[1]Denna operation görs ännu men besitter ofta ersatt med enstaka så kallad switch operation där arteria pulmonalis samt aorta byter plats.

    Åke Senning was born to the Swedish veterinarian David Senning and the nurse Elly Senning, née Säfström. He finished his schooling in Uppsala with the baccalaureate. He actually wanted to become an engineer. However, as a nurse in World War 1, his mother persuaded him to study medicine. He subsequently completed the pre-clinical part of his studies in Uppsala, the clinical part and his state examination in Stockholm in His subsequent further training in Stockholm included general surgery, orthopaedics and thoracic and neurosurgery.

    Clarence Crafoord introduced him to the field of cardiac surgery in The influence of this eminent surgeon, who had a major impact on thoracic and cardiac surgery, sparked Senning's love of cardiac surgery and thus helped determine the direction of his work throughout his life.     Prof. Ake Senning was one of the world’s foremost pioneers in cardiac surgery. His ‘firsts’ included performing a corrective operation for patients with transposition of the great arteries in (the “Senning operation”) and implanting the first cardiac pacemaker in Later that same year, Dr. Senning also introduced autogenous fascia lata trileaflet valves for the replacement of diseased human aortic valves   He was the first to use elective fibrillation in heart surgery. Early in his career, he helped develop one of the first pump oxygenators for cardiopulmonary bypass.


    Ake received his medical degree from Uppsala University in Stockholm. In , he left the University Thoracic Clinic of the Karolinska Hospital to move to Zurich as Professor of Surgery and Director of the Surgical Clinic. He and his team performed the first heart transplant in Switzerland in It was there that Ake Senning met Andreas Grüntzig and they became friends. Dr. Senning encouraged Andreas Grüntzig to go ahead and perform his first coronary angioplasty promising that “he would be there, should anything go wrong”.
